Neverwinter: Tyranny of Dragons
House of Knowledge
The House of Knowledge
The House of Knowledge was once one of the most impressive buildings in Neverwinter, a tall, many-windowed, arch-roofed temple to Oghma famed all along the Sword Coast, located at one end of the Dolphin Bridge. At one time it was a repository of chronicled learning, including maps, history, and hundreds of poems and chapbooks produced over the centuries.
After the eruption of Mount Hotenow in the Year of Knowledge Unearthed (419 NR, 1451 DR), an elderly human named Brother Anthus became the foremost cleric at the temple, later revealed to have been lured into the service of the Abolethic Sovereignty in his research on the Spellplague. Through Brother Anthus, the Sovereignty took over the temple entirely until sending Rohini, a succubus that had been sent to drive out the aboleths that had instead fallen under their sway, as “the Prophet.” She took the Oghmanites to Helm’s Hold.
The Commonwealth of Neverwinter has dedicated as much money as it can to rebuilding the House of Knowledge, and has invited clerics from the Oghmanyte Church in Exile from Waterdeep to come and reoccupy the temple. This branch of the church has adopted a novel doctrine that knowledge must be tested and proven “worthy” before being released to the public. Many sovereigns in the Free State of Neverwinter allege that the Commonwealth invited clerics from this branch and not the more mainstream Orthodox Church of Oghma in the hopes of squashing their philosophy. Some on the council speak in terms that would seem to confirm that allegation, saying that it is important to test radical notions, and some ideas can be very dangerous. Others say they chose to invite the clerics from the Oghmanyte Church in Exile because of the recent scandal in the Orthodox Church in Waterdeep concerning a school it ran that abducted Uthgardt children from their families to “educate” them. The council simply refused to invite any clerics who might have been involved in that affair, which left only the clerics from their rival branch.
