Neverwinter: Tyranny of Dragons
He who wishes to be obeyed must know how to command.
The Zhentarim seeks to become omnipresent and inescapable, more wealthy and powerful, and most importantly, untouchable. The public face of the organization appears much more benign, offering the best mercenaries money can buy. When a merchant needs an escort for his caravan, when a noble needs bodyguards to protect her holdings, or when a city needs trained soldiers to defend its honor, the Zhentarim provides the best-trained fighting men and women money can buy. However, the cost of doing business with the Black Network can be high.
The Black Network wants to make it necessary — and preferable, even — to deal with its members. It wants to secure, over time, an iron-fisted monopoly. Members must be the best — the cheapest, the fastest, and the most secure — at providing services and goods both legal and illicit, willing to lose coin if it means destroying a competitor, and securing profits from everyone they deal with, except when to do so would work against the Black Network’s ultimate goal: to make everyone dependent on it.
A member of the Zhentarim thinks of himself or herself as a member of a very large family and relies on the Black Network for resources and security. However, members are granted enough autonomy to pursue their own interests and gain some measure of personal power or influence.
- The Zhentarim is your family. You watch out for it, and it watches out for you.
- You are the master of your own destiny. Never be less than what you deserve to be.
- Everything and everyone has a price.
To amass wealth, power, and influence.
Bullywug Infestation: The Zhentarim are looking for sub-contractors to complete a mission to route an infestation of bullywugs from the Mere of Dead Men. Provide evidence of the deed’s completion to Brey Danamark in Leilon to collect your reward. Rewards: 200 Lords for the party, 100 XP each, 1 renown each.
Collect Taxes: The Zhentarim are looking for sub-contractors to collect outstanding taxes owed to Leyton Amcathra, lord of Crossroad Keep. Report to Sergeant Regdar Kreel at Crossroad Keep. for more information. Rewards: 500 Lords for party, 100 XP each, 1 renown each.
Wanted: Silifrey Greenwood: Silifrey fancies herself a hero of the people. She robs merchants and caravans along the High Road, and dispenses her ill-gotten goods to the common folk. This is becoming embarrassing for the Zhentarim. Bring Silifrey, alive and whole or just a head, to Maspero in Neverwinter to collect your reward. Rewards: 500 Lords for the party, 100 XP each, 2 renown each.
The Zhentarim are a strictly hierarchical organization. Renown is often used as a guide, but rank is established solely by promotion.
Rank 1: Soldier
Prerequisite: Enlistment in the Black Network
You are a member of the Black Network. The Zhentarim is your family. You watch out for it, and it watches out for you. You are expected to faithfully carry out your orders. Failure to do so may result in punishment. Executing your orders faithfully, however, will be rewarded. You receive a payment of 1 Lord every firstday. You receive hazard pay of 1 Lord for every combat you fight while on a mission for the Zhentarim.
Rank 2: Corporal
Prerequisite: Promotion by a lieutenant or higher
Soldiers who serve well may be promoted to the rank of corporal. Corporals command a squad of four soldiers. Your payment is increased to 2 Lords, paid every firstday. Likewise, your hazard pay is increased to 2 Lords for each combat you fight while on a mission for the Zhentarim.
Rank 3: Sergeant
Prerequisite: Promotion by a captain or higher
Corporals who serve well may be promoted to the rank of sergeant. Sergeants are responsible for the training and discipline of several Zhentarim squads. Four corporals report directly to you, with four soldiers under each of them, giving you a total force of 20 Zhents at your command. Your salary is increased to 4 Lords paid every firstday, and your hazard pay is increased to 4 Lords for each combat you fight while on a mission for the Zhentarim.
Rank 4: Lieutenant
Prerequisite: Promotion by a general
Sergeants who serve well may be promoted to join the Zhentarim’s officers as a lieutenant. Lieutenants have a sergeant assigned to them to help them command their unit. Lieutenants have much more latitude than sergeants to pursue the Black Network’s goals. Your salary is increased to 8 Lords paid every firstday. Officers are not expected to go into combat personally, so there is no established hazard pay. That said, the Black Network is generous to officers who are so dedicated that they willingly risk their lives to advance its goals.
Rank 5: Captain
Prerequisite: Promotion by a general
Captains are often responsible for large segments of the Black Network’s operations, with four to eight lieutenants reporting to them, each with 20 Zhentarim soldiers at their command. Captains are often the closest confidantes and advisors to the generals and leaders of the Zhentarim. Your salary is increased to 20 Lords paid every firstday. Officers are not expected to go into combat personally, so there is no established hazard pay. That said, the Black Network is generous to officers who are so dedicated that they willingly risk their lives to advance its goals.
